Shawnee Mission Medical Center to Purchase Land in Southern Johnson County

MERRIAM, Kan. – Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) has announced its intention to purchase 42 acres of land in southern Overland Park for a future health care facility of up to 400 beds and 240,000 square feet of medical office space. The land, bound by 159th Street, 167th Street, Antioch Road and 69 Highway, is part of the Village of Overland Park, a 300 acre master-planned community being developed by Price Brothers Development. Plans for the area also include a destination town-center retail project, offices, a hotel and residential space.

“As our community grows, our goal is to continue providing services to meet the expanded health care needs of our patients, in convenient locations close to their homes,” said Samuel H. Although the future hospital project is still in the planning stages, it will be developed in a phased approach based on community need beginning with space for outpatient services and physician offices. Construction is not scheduled to begin for at least two years.

SMMC is currently utilizing the phased-development approach in the construction of the Shawnee Mission Outpatient Pavilion at Prairie Star Parkway in western Lenexa, scheduled to open in mid-2008. The facility will feature emergency, imaging and surgical services, as well as physician offices and a medical spa. Plans call for

SMMC has the busiest emergency department in Johnson County, the area's first accredited Chest Pain Emergency Center, a nationally recognized Center for Women's Health and delivers more babies each year than any other hospital in the metropolitan area. SMMC employs more than 2,800 local residents and supports an exceptional staff of 700 physicians representing 50 medical specialties, the largest medical staff in Kansas City.
